What's Old?

December 24, 1999 Merry Christmas!

For those who celebrate, but here's a present for everyone! Download the new January 2000 ABC Packet.
December 14, 1999 The double flu

Great, don't we all just love this time of year. I had the flu, not once, but twice in one month. Okay, it wasn't that severe... but anyway, I'm using that excuse for not updating this page :-) My apologies, I just haven't found the time to do very much with it. I don't even know how many snippets I have so far, my mailbox is a mess, I won't actually be clearing it for another week. Still, I don't think this month's packet will be that big, maybe 30-40 snippets.
October 31, 1999 A little Halloween trick...

Okay, so there was no delay, sue me. :-p At least some people were fooled, maybe... helps lessen the load at this time of the month. Anyway, tricks aside, here's a treat, 87 of them to be exact. Get your latest copy of the November ABC Packets here.
October 29, 1999 Slight delay in ABC release...

There might be a 1, or at most 3, day delay in the release of the November 1999 ABC Packets. Sorry for any inconvenience, please don't e-mail me about this delay, thanks!
October 16, 1999 Well...

Details on the new All BASIC Developer's Magazine will be announced soon. I won't be maintaining this magazine, Quinn Tyler Jackson has devoted some of his time to work on editing and publishing. We hope to cover all aspects of BASIC. In other news, I had the chance to try out Envelop BASIC v1.4, it really is what it claims "a Visual BASIC replacement." It's abandon-ware, meaning there's literally no support (little to no user support either), and the authors have moved on to other things so it's unlikely Envelop BASIC will be advanced any further than it is. I don't think it's a true Native code compiler, but if you really want to learn VB, I think Envelop BASIC is as close as they come.
October 3, 1999 A snowy weekend

34 new snippets to preview. Still lots of time to send in your source codes!
September 18, 1999 All BASIC Developers Magazine

Anyone interested in a magazine all about BASIC? Sorry for lack of updates, it's a mess. It's likely that I won't even try to adopt the All Code Format, it's too much work to convert everything and rewrite all the scripts I already use to convert *.ABC to HTML. I've stopped updating the Rapid-Q compiler, further releases will be minor, but I will be working on a GUI designer for it soon. I've received about 12 snippets for the November issue. I probably won't release any previews until the end of this month.
September 6, 1999 Rapid-Q goes stable

Rapid-Q has expanded quite nicely, it's been evenly split between Windows and Linux/Unix users. This may be the last update for quite some time, so check it out if you haven't already. Everyone agrees, it's easier than VB (but still powerful), and you can't find an easier language to program in Linux/Unix! The documentation is almost fully complete, so now's the time to program in Rapid-Q.
August 31, 1999 New September 1999 ABC Packets

77 new snippets, download packet, or check them out!
August 29, 1999 More Rapid-Q Updates

You can now create your own Rapid-Q components in Rapid-Q. Check it out! Also, my mailbox is just piling up, sorry about my laziness, I'll try to answer some of them ASAP. Don't worry, I still read e-mails, so keep sending them, but I just don't have time to answer each and everyone I receive. Thanks for your patience! I'm afraid it's going to get worse the next few weeks.
August 25, 1999 BASIC Game Compilers

Take a gander at the up and coming BASIC game creation tools available for Windows, GamesBasic and Dark Basic. Which coincidentally originate from the UK. They are separate products, not to be confused. GamesBasic has already released some betas, I've tried them, they work well, and their IDE looks like Delphi, nice. Dark Basic is currently working on releasing a beta in a few months, I've tried their 3D Land Demo, it rotated smoothly, and it's fast! This looks very promising. Check them out in the compilers section for more!
August 21, 1999 Missed preview

Oops, I was planning to release another preview this week, but unforunately that did not happen. It's a little late to release another preview, so you'll all have to wait until the September ABC Packets are released. Thanks for all your submissions, we have over 70 snippets so far, keep them coming. I've moved the Rapid-Q page so it appears full screen now. Lots of updates in regards to the Linux/Unix version. Some minors ones to the Windows version.
August 14, 1999 DirectX for Rapid-Q

Support for DirectX has been added to Rapid-Q, only introductory stuff... check out the side scroller! If you run into any complications, feel free to e-mail me about it. See the Rapid-Q page.
August 12, 1999 Searching properly

If you've tried using our search engine and haven't found what you're looking for, then perhaps you need to revise your searches. Please see the Search Tips section.
August 6, 1999 Socket Programming in Rapid-Q

Rapid-Q now supports sockets (sorry Linux only).
August 2, 1999 So what else is new?

Rapid-Q IDE bug fixed, as well as others... added Tab Control as well. If you're running Linux, try out our Linux version. In other news, no one has really complained about the new All Code Format, but who knows what I plan to do... don't throw away all your ABC Packets just yet. Right now, I'm feeling quite lackadaisical about all of this. Our Graphics section is way too huge, are there any volunteers to split this up into other categories? Like SVGA.ABC, 3D.ABC, etc... yeah, a lot of work involved. There's also people who want to split up QB and PB source codes, anyone want to volunteer? All this would require significant work, I guess the only way I can compensate you is to put up a banner ad for your homepage/product for a month or two... Please e-mail me for all the details before doing anything.
July 30, 1999 New September Preview

As promised, here's the new September ABC Packet Preview. 55 snippets to drool over, enjoy!
July 26, 1999 Thanks Santa!

Well, not exactly Santa (but that is his last name). I've just been dumped 2MB+ of source code in my mailbox. I never knew there was a DirectPB available... Anyway, we're already up 54 snippets to this point, so I'll release a preview sometime this week. Keep those submissions coming, thanks!
July 24, 1999 Some Rapid-Q bug fixes

There's also a simple columns game for it! See the Rapid-Q Page
July 21, 1999 Yep, more Rapid-Q updates

Fixed some major bugs, added some new components, have fun! Rapid-Q Page
July 19, 1999 First ABC September 1999 Preview...

23 new snippets this month, plenty of time left for you to submit your programs! Preview packet. In other news, the Rapid-Q compiler now comes complete with IDE and documentation. Hopefully this will give people some extra information to start developing their Windows applications.
July 13, 1999 Rapid-Q again...

More updates on Rapid-Q, featuring DLL support, and many more goodies. As well, sorry for all those CGI form errors, everything should be working fine now. We have about 12 new snippets so far, I'll release a preview next week, so keep those submissions coming, thanks!
July 12, 1999 Did I speak too soon?

Having run the DOS version of the All Code Reader in real mode DOS (without Smartdrv enabled or Windows), I have come to the conclusion that, holy **** is it slow. That's compared to the ABC Express Reader. Since there's no index file, and the fact that all packets are ID'd, it creates a huge problem for large packets. It's not so bad with SmartDrv enabled, but it's still a bit slow on my P200. I'm at crossroads right now, but your comments can definitely sway my position on this All Code Format. Let me know if it's better just to keep the old format, or adopt the new format with all the fancy wancy stuff and kill overall performance.
July 8, 1999 All Code Reader For DOS!

What, did you think I'd abandon DOS altogether, pssh ;-) Actually, thanks to someone's e-mail, I've started on a quick hack of the DOS version. Check out the reader, or just look at the screen shots.
July 7, 1999 Another Rapid-Q release

Here's the second proto-type. Infinite arrays, infinite parameter passing, are some of the new features. Also, please do not link our search engine on your page, I've already added a HTTP_REFERER to prevent anyone from doing so. You can leech all our source codes and set one up yourself, which I think someone out there has already done :) Our site is completely ad free (expect maybe for the awards we get), so it's not like we need all the hits... although it is nice to have.
July 4, 1999 Rapid-Q Compiler beta/promo

Since things have been moving along so fast, I've decided to release the Rapid-Q compiler beta/promo. This is just to demonstrate how easy it is to create your own Windows Applications. Please visit the Rapid-Q page for more. Also updated user files section, with one new submission.
June 30, 1999 NEW July 1999 ABC Packet

Download it! 83 new snippets, including the JPEG loaders by Dmitry Brant and Petter Holmberg. There will be some changes in the future, it may involve the All Code Reader.
June 20, 1999 Last July Preview

Preview the July 1999 ABC Packets. There's still plenty of time left for you to send in your source codes for this issue. Thanks for all the support!
June 18, 1999 Form submission errors!

It seems our form mailer failed sometime last week (or about 2 weeks ago, I'm not even sure). Anyway, please resubmit anything you think got lost. For example, if you submitted a link to me, and don't see it up, it means it got lost somewhere, so please fill out the form again, thanks. Same goes with the Wanted list and User files. Sorry for the inconvenience, I have no control over the form mailer on this server, so I can't tell you exactly what's wrong. I'll be using my own form mailer so I can track any problems.
June 14, 1999 Thanks for reading...

I've had a few user file submissions go bad, please provide a URL, not C:\QBASIC\myfile.bas Anyway, some people are interested in the Rapid-Q project, all I have to say is I'm just starting to work on it. I will continue to complete the All Code Reader, which is about 80% complete, now for the features, hehehe. If there's enough interest, I could release a partially working Rapid-Q compiler sometime in July if possible. In the meantime, keep those submissions coming, we have about 51 snippets so far. Just as a side note, if anyone cares, Microsoft has bought some control (shares) over Inprise (aka Borland). I just hope Inprise still keeps Delphi alive, but I'm uncertain of how Microsoft's influence will affect their products. I can barely stomach anything MS nowadays.
June 11, 1999 Newbies section

I realize that this site might not be the friendliest to newbies or new comers to the ABC Archives, so I've written a short tutorial in the hopes to alleviate some of these newbie questions I've been getting lately.
June 6, 1999 New VB Section

I've started a new VB section, perhaps as a test drive of my All Code Reader. In any event, you can e-mail me your VB source codes, I'll start adding them within a week or two. When I finish my All Code Reader, I'll start distributing them as Code Packets so you can view them off-line.
June 2, 1999 Fully functional ABC Search!

The much anticipated ABC Search engine is finally available. I wrote the whole thing from scratch, so it's completely customizable. The database only takes up half a meg, so the search is pretty fast! For the moment, I don't want to bog down my own server, so only a maximum of 50 matches will be returned. Try it, and tell me what you think!
May 29, 1999 2 JPEG Viewers for QB

Not too long ago, Petter Holmberg and Dmitry Brant released their JPEG Viewers for QBasic and QB. Both do greyscale, but Dmitry has one for QB that displays JPEGs in color using a VESA library for true color JPEGs. Both are their own independent work, which is also amazing since their release was almost simultaneous. Don't expect too much from them though, the JPEG viewers are very slow, but I'm sure they're working on optimizing it as we speak. Anyway, I bet you're all dying to see it, so here's where you can get it: Petter's JPEG Viewer and Dmitry's JPEG Viewer
May 28, 1999 Added some user files

I've updated the user files page, for the person who submitted the 4 files, e-mail me your name, I couldn't download your files, it was either too busy or just not there. Thanks.
May 27, 1999 Added O'Basic and Bywater BASIC

See the compilers section for more information on O'Basic and Bywater BASIC.
May 23, 1999 New design

I get really bored with the same old webpage, so I usually design new ones once every few months. If you don't like the multiple frames or perky colours, let me know.
May 22, 1999 ABC to AC v1.1

This version corrects a bug in v1.0, so now there shouldn't be any problems in converting your *.ABC files to the new All Code Format. If you have v1.0, just change line 258 to:
fwrite(code, 1, i+1, fout);
And re-compile the code.
May 19, 1999 Okay, fixed...

Re-uploaded the files, everything should be okay now... e-mail me if you find anything wrong, thanks.
May 19, 1999 Ahhhhhh Shoot!

(Rated-PG) Damn my cheap-free always-busy piece of ISP cut me off again. Don't download the All Code Reader yet, it got cut off, so you won't be downloading the whole thing. There's also a source code called Modular1.txt which is cut-off (actually, it's blank). Nevermind these errors, I'll try to fix them once all these permission denied messages goes away.
May 19, 1999 July 1999 ABC Packet Preview

Here's the first preview of the July '99 ABC Packets. 18 snippets so far. In other news, there's some new screen shots of the All Code Reader, as well as the new bare bones reader v0.010b. You can now create your own packets, add screen shots or extra information to previous ABC Packets (convert ABC to AC), and a bunch of other cool stuff.
May 14, 1999 Nothing to report

Just some page updates, new links, new user files, etc... I've been mainly energy-less the past week (ie. pulling teeth). So I haven't quite sorted out the submissions yet, I hope to release the July preview sometime next week. In the meanwhile, keep those submissions coming, and please stop asking silly questions. Most of the answers can be found somewhere on this webpage (ie. FAQs).
May 4, 1999 All Code Structure finalized?

I've posted a tentative final draft of the All Code Structure, any suggestions or comments are welcome. I'm always open to changes... I have not uploaded the new readers yet, or released any new screen shots. All I can say is that in about a month or two (depending on my time), I should have the Windows reader completed. After that, I'll finish the Linux version, which by the way, requires Qt 1.42 unless you didn't know already.
Apr. 30, 1999 New May 1999 ABC Packets

Hot off the press, with 89 new snippets! About 770KB worth of source code. Download it now!
Apr. 30, 1999 My projects this year

BASEC v0.20 FINAL is now out, I think this is the final nail, I won't do any more updates unless someone pays me to :) I've created a few CGI programs using BASEC, but by no means should you give up Perl for it. My All Code Project is at a stand still. I haven't quite decided on the structure of the update packages. E-mail me if you have any ideas. I've tinkered with my new RAPID-Q BASIC compiler for Windows, nothing much, but laying a groundwork for bigger things. Don't expect results until a few months, I'm busy with pulling teeth and that sort of stuff...
Apr. 25, 1999 Next packet to be released next week

Just a reminder, the new May 1999 ABC Packets will be released next week, maybe as early as Friday, so if you have any source codes that you want submitted to this issue, please do so before then. So far we have about 80+ snippets. I've also updated the All Code Reader for Linux, you can now do the bare bones stuff just like the Windows one. See the screen shots for more information. I would like to release both readers simultaneously, but I'm sure the Windows reader would be more useful for most people. I'll try to concentrate on that one a bit more. If you want the source code to my Windows reader (for Delphi3 or 4), please e-mail me. The source codes for the Linux version has been included already. You'll need the Qt widget set (www.troll.no) if you plan to modify it.
Apr. 18, 1999 Updated compilers section

Added Tokiwa BASIC (thanks to ljones for this information) and UBasic.
Apr. 15, 1999 Minor changes

Added the question of the month/week. Now's your chance to voice your opinions! I will put up a new question once I get enough responses, or a month has passed, which ever comes first. Added All Code Reader for linux, updated a few links, and updated wanted list.
Apr. 14, 1999 Added a Search engine

I'm not sure exactly if this is just experimental or if I plan to grow the database. So far, there's not much in the database.
Apr. 12, 1999 Search Engine?

I know it's hard searching through 2000+ source codes for the right one, but since we don't have a search engine on this site, I will be incorporating my own 'little search' engine. It won't be very comprehensive because I have a limit on my own server (located elsewhere). I'll try to post something up in a few weeks. Also, check the FAQS section if you wanted to know about the mysterious .CDE file structure. I've only received a few feedbacks in regards to this page, I'm assuming people are content with the layout, but what else should be added to our site?
Apr. 8, 1999 Mind as well post it!

Here's the final preview to the May 1999 ABC Packets, the deadline to contribute, as always, is the first day of the month, so no later than May 1, 1999. Don't worry if you already e-mailed me your source codes and can't find it on the preview page. I've been swamped with so much other stuff, I couldn't find the time to include them all yet. I should have lots of time by the end of this month though, so no excuses there! Oh yes, just so long as I don't keep getting these busy signals :)
Apr. 6, 1999 Busy busy busy...

That's the sound of my modem trying to connect... This is my excuse for not updating the page, I need a real ISP! My e-mails have been accumulating, I apologize in advanced if I don't get to answer it. I usually answer really short ones though, if that helps any. Also, I've received a few e-mails in regards to my BASEC compiler. I would just like to clear something up, I will NOT be working on it for a long long time. In other words, what's there is there, and any bugs you find, are there as well. :) You can download the source codes and work on it yourself, steal the secrets, make a farce out of the BASIC language, or whatever pleases you!
Apr. 5, 1999 Hello once again...

I've continued to work on the revolutionary All Code Packets Reader (hehe, well, not really). Anyway, I have syntax hilighting for BASIC done, it's pretty slow, but you can see for yourself. I'll have to optimize it, but in terms of priority, it's on the bottom of my list. I've only experimented with the QT widget set for Linux, and I plan to do a port to Unix using this set (it's very nice), if you want to help me out, I'd appreciate it.
Apr. 4, 1999 New stuff

Added/updated a few links, updated the FAQS section, and also two new User files were submitted... I've completed a short ABC2AC program which simply converts *.ABC to the new All Code Packet format. I will not adopt the new All Code Packet format until I get the reader working. Also, we have about 47 snippets so far, please send in your source codes before May 1, 1999. Thanks!
Mar. 20, 1999 First Preview

27 new snippets to check out. I will release one more preview in mid-April. As always, we appreciate any source codes you want to submit.
Mar. 15, 1999 Busy month, and so is the next...

Last update of the All Code Reader for a while... Yep, it's that time of year again (hint: cram cram cram). Anyway, hopefully I'll be able to post the first preview for May '99 next week, about 15 snippets so far... Keep those submissions coming, thanks!
Mar. 14, 1999 Some page updates

Added QMIDI v4.1, and SVGA Library to the Libraries section, updated some links, and added a new Wanted Snippets section. Some pages now have interactive forms, so you can submit over the internet rather than e-mail me directly.
Mar. 13, 1999 Downloadable ACR Demo

Here's the bare bones reader that you can download. Nothing much, but demonstrates the status of my Reader so far. You can also see the screen shots as well.
Mar. 10, 1999 Starting on The ACR Project

After some deliberation, I finalized (but still open to suggestions) the file structure of the All Code Packets. Simplicity is good, this is what I will go with. I've added two screen shots of the reader, and posted the new AC file structure here.
Mar. 7, 1999 ABC Reader 95 Code Author's Edition

Some people wanted to know when I will release this to the public, but I didn't feel too comfortable with the idea. My main concern of course, is that some people will abuse it and start their own ABC Archives, which will pretty much shut our site down. Well, okay, I'm exaggerating a little, but still, I'm going to trust no one will actually do this, so I've decided to release the Code Author's Edition to the public. It runs on Windows 95/98/NT only, I don't think I'll create one for DOS. Anyway, you can download it here. When you do create your own ABC Packet Distribution, make sure to e-mail me, I can setup a section on my page for 3rd-party ABC Packets (so to speak). Still, I would much prefer you e-mail your source codes rather than send me your distribution.
Mar. 6, 1999 Small All Code Reader Update

I've updated a small portion of the design structure... you can check it out here. I'm also thinking about adding screen shots in the Packets, which means I'm thinking "Windows." I'll probably work on the Reader in Windows, so if there's anyone who wants to port it to DOS, that would be great.
Feb. 28, 1999 Are you READY?!

Then, for the thousands of BASIC programmers and ABC die-hard fans, I present to you, the new March 1999 ABC Packets! Woo hoo! 106 snippets for your viewing pleasure. Please contribute to the next issue, expected release date: May 1, 1999.
Feb. 28, 1999 All Code Reader

I think it's time for an All Code Reader! Anything I release will be PUBLIC DOMAIN, which means you can do whatever you want with it, the more people who work on this, I think the better the product. Please read the tentative proposal. Let me know what you want added, this is by no means the final draft.
Feb. 11, 1999 Final Preview

Since the last preview, 23 more snippets have been included! Check out the new preview page
You still have 2 weeks to send in your source codes for this issue.
Feb. 6, 1999 Just some news

Updated the links page a bit, nothing spectacular. I'll be releasing another preview sometime next week, that will be the last preview before the actual release of the March '99 ABC Packets. Just to keep you up to date, we have 65 snippets, please keep those submissions coming, thanks!
Feb. 6, 1999 Group Projects?

I think it would fun to have some group projects going on this page, like a big rpg game or Hockey game! How about a Freeware Windows BASIC Interpreter? Any other proposals?
Feb. 2, 1999 More Tutorials

There's a few more tutorials submitted by others that I never got a chance to include. Well, now I do.
Jan. 31, 1999 Added some compilers

I've added a few more compilers to the compiler section, including GFA-BASIC, and Euphoria v2.1 alpha.
Jan. 30, 1999 Few Changes...

Didn't like the message board, so I switched hosts, and I also forgot to upload preview.html, so you can check out the preview section again.
Jan. 30, 1999 New ABC Message Board

Oh well, everyone else has one :)
As you might know, I already receive enough e-mails as it is, so please use this message board if you have any questions that you want answered.
Jan. 29, 1999 Another March Preview

You can preview the March 1999 ABC Packets, to be released March 1, 1999. There's about 50 new snippets, but there's no such thing as too much, so please send in your source codes, thanks!
Jan. 28, 1999 New additions

Redesigned homepage, so it's easier for me to update. Added some links, and updated the preview section.
Jan. 16, 1999 New Additions

Added Chapter 9 in tutorials section
New mailing list
Jan. 9, 1999 Finished uploading...

Okay, I've re-uploaded all the source codes, everything should work now. There's only one source code (modem.bas) in abc9709 which is not available via http/ftp.
Jan. 5, 1999 Have you noticed?

I don't know if anyone has noticed, but all the source codes available through ftp/http are lacking the first line. In some cases this shouldn't affect the output of the program, but this is my fault if the source code you downloaded doesn't work for you. Please don't bother the contributor with this, I will re-upload the 30MB of code... when I find the time, I'll let you know.
