About myself
To introduce myself, my name is . I'm a retired newspaper journalist in The Netherlands. My first programming experience occurred in the eighties of the previous century. At that time computers began to enter the Dutch newsrooms and I was challenged to let our first portable computer talk remotely to a mainframe in the office. I decided to write a communications routine using the only tool I had at hand: a Basic interpreter, probably Basica.
I soon began to dislike the 'line number' Basic of that interpreter. Selfrunning executables was what I wanted and so I 'borrowed' a copy of Turbo Basic. After teaching myself (more or less) how to write structured programs, I went out to buy a legal copy and had to discover that Borland did'nt sell it anymore. In search for an alternative, I was strongly advised to buy PowerBASIC's compiler for the DOS-environment, being TB's improved successor. It was my favorite compiler for quite a long time. Forced by 'the market' however, I've finally switched to PowerBasic's GUI-compiler for Windows. I must say it has been a blood, sweat and tears-experience to change my programming attitude from DOS to Windows, but looking back it was worth the effort.

In a few words: I love programming. I also like to share ideas with fellow programmers. So it was rather obvious that I said "yes" when Dave, the originator of this site, invited me to join the Basic Guru project.
